Universitario made a comeback win after a stressful first half vs ADT in a 2-1 win in the Estadio Monumental. As like in March, the “U” started this match in the worst way possible. ADT dominated possession and the “U” didn’t bother to make any attacking plays, a common theme from every match in March. ADT’s Hernan Rengifo scored the opening goal in the 16th minute in a precise cross and caught the sleeping crema centre-back Federico Alonso. After a dreadful first half, the crema world was making noise. “Fire Gutierrez”, “Don’t extend Alonso and Guardera!” was everywhere on social media during halftime and fans deserved to speak their mind.
The 2nd half things turned around. The “U” finally controlled possession more and in the 50th minute, Alex Valera scored to even things up at 1-1. After so many close plays, the “U” took the lead 2-1 in the 71st minute after a perfect cross to Rodrigo Vilca who made a beautiful set up to Valera and nailed it to the back of the net. The frustrations were long gone when the referee blew the final whistle but the poor first half performance must be fixed heading into our next match at Ayacucho this Sunday. The “U” remains 5 points (2 matches) behind the top club Binacional in the Apertura race. What needs to happen is an “U” victory plus Binacional, Muni, and a Alianza Atletico loss in order to within a match behind. We still have many matches to go and we must be stronger and hopefully Aldo Corzo and Angel Cayetano return soon to boost our lineup.
