U vs Alianza Atletico (2-2) Match Recap: Result could’ve been better

by J.P. Devetori

Universitario started shots on goal slugfest with a left foot shot by Luis Urruti but was denied by Alianza Atletico goalkeeper Igancio Barrios. The “U” were in luck after a golden opportunity miss made by Atletico’s Diego Saffadi. Saffadi rebounded a Carlos Ascues miss and had a clear net opportunity but was denied by the cross bar. The first goal came soon after by a Gerson Barreto goal in the 33rd minute. The “U” attempted to score an additional goal before the end of the first half with a blocked shot made by Rafael Guarderas and a corner kick miss by Urruti.

The start of the 2nd half was a nightmare for the “U” where the backline were caught asleep when Ascues received a cross to score the equalizer in the 48th minute. 17 minutes later, Alianza Atletico sneaked in their 2nd goal with a header goal by José Guidino. The goal came for a pass intended for Adan Balbin but it landed right on the money for Guidino. Universitario made a series of attempts to tie the game until the 86th minute where Guillermo Larios assisted Piero Quispe for the equalize in a beautiful set up. Barreto led the attack where he passed to Larios who passed intended for Alexander Succar but it was Quispe who shot off the pass to even the score at 2 a piece.

Universitario’s back line made some crucial mistakes especially in the first goal where they lacked awareness on Ascues and others. If they shifted man to man before that play, that first Atletico goal could’ve been avoided. The absence of Aldo Corzo, Hernan Novick and Alberto “Chiquitin” Quinteros really made a profound impact in this match. Expect the “U” to show improvements in their next match on Sunday vs UTC.
