Universitario vs Carlos Stein match preview: Unfinished business

by J.P. Devetori

Universitario is set to face Carlos Stein in a revenge match at the Estadio Monumental for the 3rd match day of the Clausura. The “U” seeks to avenge their 1-2 loss vs Stein from the Apertura earlier this year.

The Merengues are coming off a dominant 4-0 victory vs USM last week and seek to continue while playing in their home stadium, the Estadio Monumental. Stein is seen as another minor opponent with limited offensive reinforcement as they’re coming off a tight 2-2 draw vs Ayacucho while losing to ADT in the 1st match. Universitario needs to use their same playbook heading into today’s match vs Stein. The “U” dominated possession and it was the 2nd half that they began the goal parade vs USM. They could’ve scored more if they capitalized their shots in the 1st 45 minutes in that match. If the “U” just dominate possession and don’t miss most of their scoring attempts, then they should have 3 points on the board.

Key players to make the 3 points happen was the recently improved Pedro Quispe, the debut goalscorer Jordan Guivin, top goal scorer Alex Valera won’t be called up today. ‘Chiquitin’ Quintero improved a little last week but needs to step up since he hasn’t scored at all this year while Hernan Novick has improved in a bit also and seeks to score as well. Under Compagnucci, the defense hasn’t conceded a goal but the 3 goals they did not allow were penalties due to dumbfounded fouls. Last week was a tremendous improvement and they must continue with it today.

Kickoff will be at 3:30 pm Peru time (4:30 ET, 1:30 PT) at the Estadio Monumental. Let’s go U!
