Universitario vs Cienciano match preview: It’s now or never

by J.P. Devetori

Universitario hosts Cienciano in a crucial match day 6 at the Estadio Monumental. As the number one club in the Fase 1 table Alianza Atletico remains perfect at 15 points, the “U” needs to win just to stay 3 points behind them and remain in the race to win Fase 1. Winning Fase 1 is the first step into winning our 27th championship, the second step is to win Fase 2. Winning both makes us the undisputed champion in 2022, no need to have the playoffs. A win tonight keeps us on track to win Fase 1.

Alex Valera returns after missing last match vs Municipal but we have some key absences along the way. Injuries are keeping out Aldo Corzo, Joao Villamarin, Federico Alonso, and Luis Urruti. Urruti is out for pretty much the rest of the season (6-7 months) which is unfortunate but the recent signing of Rodrigo Vilca brings strength in the midfield/attack position.

Cienciano is coming into this match with 8 points and coming off a win vs Ayacucho. Despite selling their notable star Raziel Garcia, they have former “U” player Patrick Zubzcuk.

The “U” needs to stay focused and battle for possession in the 90 minutes and we can have this easy victory and stay in the hunt to win Fase 1. Use the same gameplan that we used vs Univ. San Martin and UCV.
