Peru vs Chile match recap: Great redemption victory

Peru vs Chile match recap: Great redemption victory

by J.P. Devetori

Peru avenged their 0-2 loss vs Chile last year to a 2-0 win and boost their World Cup qualifying chances. The Blanquirroja took advantage of Chile’s missing stars and blanked the Pacific rivals. Cueva scored the first goal from a rebound shot after Sergio Peña’s bullet attempt was blocked from Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Peña scored in the second half to make it a comfortable 2-0 lead. The Peru defense shut down Chile to only 2 shots on target with Christian Ramos finally stepping up and Alexander Callens playing a thrilling performance. Peru also played one of their most cleanest games yet with only 2 players booked for yellows (Callens and Miguel Trauco, who will miss next match). Notable returns were Jefferson Farfan and Pedro Aquino and notable absences were Gianluca Lapadula, Santiago Ormeño and Carlos Zambrano.

Peru remains in 7th with 11 points and last night’s results helped Peru be closer to 5th place by one game (3 points behind of 5th place Colombia) and 2 games (5 points behind Ecuador and Uruguay) out of 3rd and 4th place. Peru must keep up to stay in contention and are a grasp from an Intercontinental Playoff spot.

Peru next match will be at Bolivia this Sunday at 3pm Peru time (4pm Atlantic, 1pm Pacific).
