Peru vs Chile Match Preview: World Cup Qualifiers October 7

by J.P. Devetori

Peru squares against Pacific rival Chile in match day 11 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers. This is their 2nd and last match against each other in the qualifiers, Chile won the last match in their home field with a 2-0 Arturo Vidal brace victory. Peru hosts this time and kick off starts at 8pm Peru time (9pm Atlantic, 6pm Pacific). Christian Ferrerya (Uruguay) is the referee tonight.

Both national teams came off losses and these 3 October fixtures are extremely crucial. A result can change their road to Qatar 2022 in a good or bad way. Chile has suffered a blow into tonight’s match with the absences of Arturo Vidal (yellow card suspension), Eduardo Vargas, Eugenio Mena, Bastian Yañez, and Francisco Sierralta (all injured). Chile relies on Vidal and Vargas, without them will be a long and rough night for the Roja.

Peru has a couple injuries coming into this match with Renato Tapia and Yordy Reyna getting injured last minute. There are new faces in the roster for Peru. Pedro Aquino returned after a long absence, Santiago Ormeño and Carlos Zambrano return after missing out of the squad last month, and Alex Valera returns to replace the injured Yordy Reyna.

Ricardo Gareca has to use the right players for not just tonight but for all 3 matches this week in order to stay in contention for Qatar 2022. Playing Christian Ramos, Anderson Santamaria, and Raul Ruidiaz won’t do Peru any good. Peru also needs help from other national teams tonight to be within reach of qualification. A Peru victory with a Argentina victory (over Paraguay), Ecuador draw (with Bolivia), and a Uruguay draw or victory (with/over Colombia) puts Peru into closer range to 4th and 5th place.

It’s been awhile since Peru defeated Chile back in 2019 when the Blanquirroja advanced to the Copa America final with a 3-0 shutout win in the semis with memorable performances by Pedro Gallese, Yoshimar Yotun, and Paolo Guerrero.
